Problem: An escalator in a shopping mall required a soft start to
prevent damage to the drive chain gearbox on start-up. A
slow speed capability was also required for inspection
and maintenance. Because the stairs were at either end of
the mall and the escalator was located in the center of the
mall, a controller that could be quickly replaced was
required. The control panel, located under the escalator,
was by necessity very small.
Solution: The SMC Dialog Plus controller with the Preset Slow
Speed option was installed. The controller provided both
a soft start, reducing the damage to the drive chain
gearbox, and a slow speed, for inspection and
maintenance. The built-in overload protection eliminated
the need for a separate overload relay, saving valuable
panel space.
