Media

The actual wire used for the network is referred to as the physical media.

Generally, shorter cable runs are less susceptible to EMI (electromagnetic

interference) and RFI (radio-frequency interference) from electrical circuits,

motors, and other machinery.

• Long distances?

• High Magnetic fields?

• High noise?

Fiber Media

Recommendations:

• Multi-mode for general purposes, cost less

• Single-node yields higher distance, but

costs more

Do you have excess

amounts of any of these:

• Radiated noise?

• Conducted noise?

• Metal conduit?

Copper STP (shielded twisted pair)

Recommendations:

• Requires proper grounding

• Category 5e, 6, and 6a cables and

connectors

Copper UTP (unshielded twisted pair)

Recommendations:

• Requires proper grounding

• Category 5e, 6, and 6a cables and comectors
